Importing books

What kinds of books can I import?

BookSpeak reads EPUB ebooks that you can access in the Files app. PDF, Kindle-specific formats, and audio files are not EPUBs. DRM-protected or encrypted books may not be readable. Import books you own or have permission to use.

My book won’t open. What should I try?

Check that the file ends in .epub and has finished downloading from iCloud Drive or your file provider. Try opening it in another EPUB reader to check the file itself, then import it again. If the problem continues, email us the error message and where the EPUB came from. You do not need to send us the whole book.

Natural Voice

What is the difference between Standard and Natural?

Standard uses the system voices available on your Apple device. Natural Voice sends the text being prepared to BookSpeak’s cloud speech service and returns natural-sounding audio. New Natural Voice audio needs an internet connection; audio already prepared on this device can be replayed offline.

Natural Voice currently supports English text. Standard voice availability depends on the voices installed on your device.

How does the free launch offer work?

LIMITED-TIME LAUNCH OFFER — 10 HOURS FREE. The current offer includes 10 hours of newly generated Natural Voice audio. Replaying audio already cached on your device does not use more generation time.

The allowance is associated with this app installation and is not a monthly renewal. Check Settings → Natural Voice Beta for your remaining time. The offer is available for a limited time; it is not a promise of a permanent free allowance.

What happens when I use up the allowance?

You can continue using Standard playback and replaying Natural Voice audio already prepared on this device. Preparing new Natural Voice audio requires an available allowance. The current app does not offer an in-app subscription or automatic paid upgrade.

Natural Voice isn’t connecting or is taking a while.

Check your internet connection and remaining allowance. The first request may take longer while the cloud service starts. In Settings → Natural Voice Beta, try Retry Connection or Try Again when shown. If the service is temporarily unavailable, use Standard or listen to audio already prepared on your device.

Does deleting audio restore my allowance?

No. The allowance measures audio generated, not the amount of audio stored. Clearing cached audio does not refund time already used. Preparing the same text again after deleting its audio uses generation time again.

Listening & clips

Can I listen with the screen locked?

BookSpeak supports background listening and playback controls on the lock screen. Start playback in the app, then lock the screen. If playback stops unexpectedly, check your audio output, available storage, and whether the required Natural Voice audio has finished preparing.

How do I save and revisit a passage?

Use the bookmark control in the reader to save a passage. Open Clips to find passages organized by book. Tap Listen in book to return to the passage in the original book. Keep that book in your library so BookSpeak can open it again.

Can I change speed or use a sleep timer?

Yes. Use the playback-speed control in the player and the sleep-timer control to choose when playback should stop. You can also navigate between chapters and follow passage highlighting while listening.

Storage & iCloud

Where are my books and audio stored?

Your imported books, listening progress, clips, and prepared audio are stored on your device. If you enable Sync with iCloud in Settings, BookSpeak also syncs books, covers, progress, saved clips, and related reading preferences through your iCloud account. Natural Voice audio is prepared separately on each device and is not included in this sync.

How do I free up space?

Open Settings → Storage & Data → Remove Natural Voice Audio to clear prepared audio while keeping your books and clips. You will need an internet connection and available generation time to prepare that audio again.

To remove a book, open its menu on the shelf and choose Remove from Library. This also removes that book’s local audio, progress, and saved clips. With iCloud sync enabled, library changes can sync to your other devices.

iCloud sync isn’t working.

Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple iCloud account on your devices, iCloud Drive is available, and you have enough iCloud storage. Enable Settings → Sync with iCloud in BookSpeak, then tap Sync Now. Check the status shown in the app. Turning sync off stops further sync; it does not erase copies already stored in iCloud.
